DUI stop leads to assault on law enforcement officer

This morning at approximately 1:02 a.m., officers were patrolling the 1300 block of Berryville Avenue when they observed a vehicle speed into a nearby parking lot and crash into the side of a business. Officers approached the vehicle as its driver and passenger exited the car. The driver, identified as Dontrell Roberts, 26, of Winchester, attempted to flee from officers during questioning. Once apprehended, Roberts was arrested for driving with a suspended license as a result of a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction; driving under the influence; resisting arrest; obstruction of justice using threat and/or force; felony assault of a police officer; and a failure-to-appear warrant from Frederick County.

A noticeably intoxicated Roberts did not comply with the officers’ requests to speak with them after the initial crash, instead making multiple attempts to flee the scene. A short foot pursuit through the parking lot ensued. Officers attempted to detain Roberts, who became combative and struck one officer’s face and throat. Roberts was placed under arrest and transported to the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center.
