Man assaults officer during DUI investigation

Last night at approximately 9:17 p.m., Winchester Police arrested Daniel Quinn Anderson, Jr., 36, of Winchester, after he assaulted a WPD officer in a parking lot in the 300 block of Millwood Avenue.

Officers responded to Millwood Avenue upon being alerted that an intoxicated man had followed a woman by car to her place of employment, refusing to leave when asked. The victim told Anderson that she would be calling the police, and he fled the parking lot on foot. Officers detained Anderson at the intersection of Opequon and Millwood Avenues and escorted him back to the scene on Millwood. During questioning, Anderson quickly exited the patrol car and rammed his head into the officer’s chest. The officer did not sustain injuries during the assault and was able to regain detention of Anderson. During his transport to the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center, Anderson made verbal threats to the officer’s life.

The victim claimed that earlier in the night, a suspicious vehicle exited a restaurant parking lot on Pleasant Valley Road only to quickly turn around and re-enter behind her. A man exited the vehicle and approached her car in the restaurant’s drive through, opened up her passenger side door, and asked her for a lighter. The victim gave the man, who then identified himself as Daniel Anderson, a lighter in hopes to turn him away. Anderson continued to watch the victim proceed through the drive through, then re-entered his vehicle and followed her to the parking lot on Millwood Avenue where the assault against the officer would later occur.

Anderson was held without bond at the NRADC. He has been charged with felony assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, and driving under the influence.
