Latest rash of break-ins leaves officers urging everyone to lock vehicle doors

On October 3, the Winchester Police Department responded to the areas of Hillman Drive and Sterling Drive for reports of multiple vehicle break-ins.

Officers received surveillance video taken from a residence that depicts a young male wearing a wide brimmed hat, gloves, and socks pulled to the knee, trying to gain access to the vehicles in the driveway. Though unsuccessful at that particular residence, the suspect was able to snag items of significant value from several other vehicles parked in the area.

For months, the WPD has reported on thefts from motor vehicles and consistently warned residents to always lock their vehicle doors, even if they are parked in private driveways. As the surveillance video shows, thieves are not opposed to trespassing. Do not store items of value, including cash, GPS systems, cell phones, purses, or wallets in vehicles unless it is absolutely necessary for a temporary period of time. Lock all valuables in the trunk, out of view. Do not leave any valuable items in vehicles overnight, as the WPD has seen a trend in thefts happening during the evening and late-night hours.
