Department Honors 35-Year Police Veteran


On Thursday, January 12, 2017, the Winchester Police Department honored a 35-year veteran of the department who passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer.


Steve Lewis


(Retired) Master Police Officer Stephen P. Lewis Sr., 72, started his career at the Winchester Police Department as a reserve officer in 1981.  He became a full-time Patrol Officer in 1999, and served as fleet manager from 2011, until his passing in January, 2017. He is a Winchester, VA native and a graduate of Handley High School.


During Steve’s funeral service, he was remembered for his dedication and love for his family, the police department, and his service to the community.  Steve was given the nickname “Mr. Fix It” by his co-workers because he took great pride in managing and repairing the department’s vehicles.  He always had a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. He loved to make people laugh and was proud to be serve his community.


Steve’s legacy will continue to live on through his son, Cpl. Ritchie Lewis, who is also a decorated officer with the Winchester Police Department.  His family requests that in memory of Steve, when you see a police officer, please show your appreciation by way of a handshake, a hug, verbal thanks, or any acknowledgement of gratitude for the safety they provide us.
