Winchester Police to publish General Orders online

As part of an ongoing effort to increase transparency, the Winchester Police Department (WPD) began publishing its General Orders on the official department website, www.winchesterpolice.org, on March 12, 2018.

The WPD’s General Orders are a culmination of laws, legal decisions, best practices, and community input that serve as a daily guide for staff to ensure a professional workforce that acts in accordance with training and Virginia law enforcement accreditation standards.

Since December 2017, a policy review workgroup made up of 16 members across ranks and divisions of the department has met weekly to analyze and discuss each policy in the General Orders. Any suggested changes are reviewed by the command staff and sent to Chief John Piper for approval.

“The workgroup has been tasked with thoroughly examining each of our General Orders to ensure that the policy reflects best practices and is reflective of the highest levels of professionalism our community expects from its Police Department,” stated Chief Piper.

The community can expect to see newly revised policies posted frequently online as they are reviewed and approved.
