Winchester Police Department publishes use of force data

The Winchester Police Department (WPD) has placed its use of force statistics from 2017 - 2019 on the WPD website.  After hearing from citizens at community forums, Chief John Piper made a commitment to have a report available by the end of the year, "Transparency is important to the citizens and visitors of the City of Winchester, and this is another manner in which our Department can assure our level of dedication and performance."   General Orders, including the use of force policies, have also been a part of the WPD's transparency efforts which began in September 2017, after Chief Piper was selected as the Department's Chief of Police.  "Further, our Department is committed to training in use of force, critical incident decision making, and crisis intervention training (CIT), with over 50 officers being certified in the extensive training program focused on those in mental health crisis."

While the use of force data is limited for 2017 - 2019, the 2020 data and report will be comprehensive and include race, gender, and age of persons involved.  It is anticipated the 2020 information will be posted in January 2021.
