Suspected arson attempt at Douglas Community Learning Center

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on April 25, 2018, Winchester Police (WPD) officers responded to the Douglas Community Learning Center on North Kent Street for a report of a breaking and entering. The report was made by other WPD officers who were on-scene for training.

The initial investigation led officers to discover that unknown suspects had removed several fire extinguishers from the walls and deployed them throughout the entire school. Paint was splattered and streaked in several areas. All of the rooms contained damaged shelving and property. Burned remnants of material were found among several locations where small fires had been set. A damaged door was determined to be the point of entry into the school.

The WPD is being assisted by the City’s Fire Marshals and Winchester Public Schools during the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information that will assist the WPD in identifying the suspects is asked to call the WPD’s non-emergency number at 540-662-4131.
