Dog found deceased, discarded in plastic bag

Winchester Police (WPD) officers were dispatched to the 400 block of National Avenue on May 20 at approximately 9:12 p.m. for a report of animal cruelty. When officers arrived on scene, they found a deceased small black chihuahua inside a reusable shopping bag.

Clear plastic was wrapped and tied around the dog’s head. The rear legs of the dog were found in an additional plastic bag inside the reusable shopping bag. Officers transported the pet to the emergency veterinarian for further investigation.

Witnesses in the area reported to police that they had seen the bag on the sidewalk since the morning but were all unaware of its contents.

The dog was wearing a black collar without identification tags. Anyone with information regarding this incident or the possible identity of the owner is strongly encouraged to call Officer Slonaker of the Winchester Police Department at 540-662-4131.

UPDATE - 2:48 p.m. 5/21/2018 - Winchester Police have received information that the dog was hit by a vehicle. However, the WPD continues to search for the owner of the dog to investigate the manner in which the dog was disposed.
