Residents Urged to Report any Suspicious Devices to Police
The Winchester Police Department wants to remind residents that if they see a suspicious device to immediately contact police. Residents should not handle any such devices for their safety and the safety of others.
On February 18, 2013 officers were called to the 400 block of Merrimans Lane around 1 p.m. for a possible explosive device that was found next to a mailbox. Officers secured the scene to ensure the safety of anyone in the area. The Virginia State Police Bomb Squad responded to assist in the investigation and to remove the suspicious device. It was determined that the device did contain explosive material. This incident is a good reminder for residents to be aware of their surroundings and to notify police when there is a concern.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Solvers at (540) 665-TIPS.
